MEDIA CAMPAIGN ON SPEAKING NIGERIAN INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES AMONG NIGERIANS LIVING ABROAD

Abstract

The growing Nigerians in Diaspora has highlighted the importance of safeguarding and promoting the diverse linguistic legacy of Nigeria's native languages. This research summary outlines a communication strategy designed to encourage Nigerians residing overseas to actively embrace and use their indigenous languages. Utilizing social media, local radio, and cultural gatherings, the campaign aims to cultivate a sense of belonging and cultural identity among the Diaspora. By employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the study identifies significant obstacles faced by Nigerians abroad in preserving their native languages, including the impact of globalization, cultural integration, and limited educational resources. Targeting youth and young adults within the Diaspora, the initiative stresses the significance of language in upholding cultural heritage and continuity. By sharing success stories and highlighting the advantages of bilingualism, such as enhanced cognitive abilities and cultural sensitivity, the campaign endeavors to inspire discussions on language usage within the community. It features interactive sessions, language exchange initiatives, and collaborations with local cultural groups to encourage active involvement. The expected outcomes of the campaign encompass a noticeable rise in the usage of indigenous languages among participants, enhanced cultural pride, and a more robust community network. Ultimately, this endeavor aims to bridge linguistic barriers and empower Nigerians abroad to reclaim their linguistic roots, ensuring the vitality of Nigeria's native languages in an interconnected world.
