Nominal Modifiers in Obolo

Abstract

This study describes nominal modifiers in Obolo. Obolo native speakers are found in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States of Nigeria. Being a descriptive study, the presented data are drawn from the intuitive knowledge of the author and corroborated by other native speakers of Obolo. Nominal modifiers in Obolo with certain restrictions can occur only at pre-head or post-head and some at both positions in relation to the nominal it qualifies. The paper identifies adjectives, determiners, quantifiers, associative constructions, demonstratives, intensifiers, emphasizers and the relative clause as sub-classes of Obolo nominal modifiers. The data analysis reveals that Obolo modifiers are predominantly post-modifiers.
