RELEVANCE OF LEARNING STRATEGIES IN SECOND LANGUAGE (L2) TEACHING AND LEARNING

Abstract

The paper aims at investigating the relevance of learning strategies in second language (L2) teaching and learning. Over the years significant shift has taken place in language learning leading to a greater emphasis on teaching and learning languages. The paper therefore provides an overview of issues concerning second language learning strategies (meta-cognitive, cognitive knowledge, social learning and cooperative learning) and highlight their importance in L2 teaching and learning. It explores the pedagogical implications of learner training to learn and then analyses the issues concerning the choice of effective strategies in language learning, choice of language learning and learner training for teachers and course designers. The result findings show that strategies in the teaching of L2 are to encourage the students to establish communication with people who speak the target languages. It further recommends that in teaching L2, the effective methods should be those which are arranged according to principles of cooperation learning and social strategies and concludes that language learning strategies should involve individual’s unique cognitive, social, effective learning styles and strategies.
