INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICTS): A PANACEA TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIAN LANGUAGES.

Abstract

Information and communication technologies have provided society with a vast array of new communication capabilities to achieve phenomenal strides. Although the deplorable situation of Nigerian languages has been so affirmed, very little has been done, in spite of the high faulting rhetoric to rectify it. Indigenous Nigerian languages have struggled with the problem of relevance in a changing world, especially when juxtaposed with the languages such as English, Arabic and French.In view of the above, this paper attempts to examine the roles of ICTs in the development of Nigerian languages. This is done by examining the status of Nigerian Languages and its classification, concept of ICTs, the roles of ICTs in the development of Nigerian languages, and challenges. The study concludes that ICTs are resources for the development of Nigerian Languages and finally recommended among others proper funding for ICTs resources.
